It is not just a competition: it is a celebration that brings together history, effort, passion, and the authentic taste of life on the lake.

Its origins are ancient, dating back even to the times of Alessandro Manzoni and his The Betrothed. At the center of this story is the Lucia, a long and slender boat that was originally a working vessel used by local fishermen. Two oars, strength, and coordination were all that was needed to navigate the lake’s waters gracefully. Over time, the Lucia ceased to be just a working tool and became a symbol of tradition and local identity. Today, it is even the logo of “Vista Lago” and, naturally, the undisputed star of the lake’s most fascinating regatta.

During the competition, pairs of men and women face off with vigor and determination. Women cover 500 meters, while men tackle 2,000 meters of sheer strength, technique, and endurance. It is not only a race against speed: it is a battle against time, the wind, and oneself. Every stroke of the oar ripples across the water, and every curve of the lake becomes a small stage where emotion and adrenaline merge.

The Domaso stage is truly magical. From the lakeside promenade, located right in front of the “Vista Lago” apartments, you can witness every detail of the regatta: boats gliding across the water, ripples forming as oars cut through the surface, the focused faces of the rowers, and the crowd erupting in applause and cheers. Just stepping outside brings you into an experience that seems suspended between history and the present.

Typically, the regatta reaches Domaso during the first weekends of July. The morning begins with the rowers’ parade – a spectacle of precision, pride, and smiles – before the starting signal sounds around 10:00 a.m. Megaphones shout, the crowd encourages the teams, and the atmosphere is a mix of festivity, tension, and wonder. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself shouting and cheering along with everyone else: it’s impossible to remain a passive spectator.

Then there are the little details that make the experience even more special: the wind caressing the lake, the reflection of the sun on the water, the rhythmic sound of the oars, and the sense of community that makes your heart beat faster. Friends, families, children, and tourists gather along the promenade, sharing a moment of pure emotion. Every finish, every stroke of the oar, every victory is celebrated as a small collective achievement.

For spectators and rowers alike, the Lucia Regatta is not just a race: it is a journey through time, an encounter with the lake’s roots and culture, a celebration of Domaso and its community. And, of course, there is always that passionate cheering, hoping to see Domaso win.

If we had to choose the most beautiful, exciting, and convivial event in Domaso – and perhaps on the entire Lake Como – our choice would undoubtedly fall on the Lucia Regatta.
